Hearing Health in Children
Over three million kids under the age of 18 have some form of hearing loss including four out of every one thousand infants. So every parent and caregiver should be vigilant in recognizing indication of hearing loss in his/her child and seek an expert medical diagnosis. Hearing loss will increase the risk associated with development delays in speech and language. Here are some indicators for hearing loss:
Newborns (birth to 28 days of age)
- Weigh less than 3.5 pounds at birth
- Unusual appearance of the face or ears
- Jaundiced (yellow skin) at birth and had an exchange blood transfusion
- In neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for more than five days
- Received an antibiotic medication injected into a vein
- Had meningitis
- Failed newborn hearing screening test
Infants (29 days to 2 years)
- Received an antibiotic medication injected in a vein
- Has meningitis
- Has a neurological disorder
- Has a severe injury with a fracture of the skull
- Has recurring ear infections with fluid in ears for more than three months
